Once I did a lot of knitting but nobody wants to wear anymore my pullovers so I stopped! but now there are whole you can felt in the washing machine... and that is quite interesting. So this weekend, messy weather outside I started this project:

finished you put it for a cycle in the washing machine at 40°C with some soap, it shrinks about 30%. And thats the result:

Just have to sew a linning and a zip and I have a perfect felted bag.. had because my two girls both want this one, so I'll have to knit anothers.

Last weekend I was in Barcelona for work, but not only! I'm known to not like too much cities but more mountains and countryside, but if there is a city i love its Barcelona! Architecture is simply fantastic, there are lots of museums, the sea, god food and wine and and and. This time I finally got in the santa Maria del Mar cathedral that for several times I found closed. Santa Maria del Mar, 14th century, is considered the finest and most complete Catalan Gothic cathedral. And she's fantastic!

Birmingham the festival of Quilt!

For the very first time I have been in Birmingham this year. I was so excited to finally see the festival of Quilt that has been described to me from several persons before and I absolutely had to go there! Walking through all those empty corridors from NEC Air rail arrive to the exhibit halls at Thursday afternoon I was first wondering where all those people who should have been there was gone. But once arrived at the right hall there was no doubt! Hundred and hundred of women! And some rare man too! The first day I practically run through the exhibition looking for some orientation in all this people walking around. The second day, Friday, I decided to visit systematically all the exhibit stands. I was overwhelmed by the multitude of works exposed: from antique traditional American quilts, new traditional works, art quilts, three-dimensional works, school exhibits, clothes, stands where everything and more could be acquired and more and more.

I meet up with some people I already new, had two lectures and finally I was so tired after spending 2 days at the hall that Saturday at noon I felt I could no more resist to all those people, I had to go out spending some time in drawing and reading a book.

I’m quit satisfied from my visit in Birmingham I saw a lot of real good works but was also stunning about some qualitative low work exhibited.

I can’t remember all the artists names I took photographs, so see some pics of what I personally wanted to photograph.

I have visited the traditional patchwork exhibition organized by Patchquilt Switzerland in Solothurn. Even I'm not a big fan of traditional work, a few beautiful works in perfect technique where showed. But I'm wondering how some works could be accepted in the exhibition:
only two layers (three where requested) and bindings like this! should at my opinion never have been accepted in an exhibition!

Solitude was not an easy theme to work on, so i first made a work that in my opinion is a idillic solitude but it does absolutely not reflect the way i want to work. I'm not really attracted by figurative working.
So thats why i worked out a second piece: "the solitude of red". The red color is also contrasting the white and black background and contrast is what I'm looking for when I search solitude, its the exactly opposite of what my life normally goes ahead. I need my solitary moments to think about things develop ideas and best way to do that is e neutral background without too much challenges that would only distract.

I am OK. But my family is in Sendai. It is a very bad situation now in Japan. We are still nervous about shaking and radiation, but no way to escape. We would like to collect comfort quilts (baby to adult, new or unused) for the people who are suffering.

Naomi visited Europe several times and two fellow Swiss quilters have had the pleasure to meet her. Both of them have traveled in Japan and are organizing another trip just now.At the moment it's too early to ponder whether or not they will be able to go.

Urban blight

When I did the first research about the meaning of blight I wasn’t really convinced about the theme, but in a second time I discovered “urban blight” and that was exactly my business! “Urban blight” is matching perfectly with what I’m working on at the moment.

There are so many buildings around that are falling in decay because they are no more in use or simply nobody has the financial power or will to reconstruct them, in addition often this buildings are used like free galleries for graffiti artists, that on my opinion add interest! But obviously not everybody would agree with that.

Everybody may have noticed that I'm interested in walls. Guess what about my masterclass series theme? Exactly: walls! I'm attracted from all kind of walls, there is the wailing wall, the wall of Berlin, a lot of wheathered, scratched, painted walls and so on.
At the moment ?i'm working on a series of graffity and wheathered walls. They all start with a paintedor printed fabric, somme addition of paper and little stiching.

masterclass in Cadro

About the masterclass I had two weeks ago in Cadro with Linda Colsh:
first of all, the students where working over a whole year, making excercises, researches and learning about design and finding their own voice in their artwork, really I have to addmitt it was not such easy one could think, and there's still a lot of work to doe. All the monthly assignments where too much for me and I simply not had the time to elaborate and deepen all the possibilities. But Linda did a great job and I'm sure with the time I will go back and making more exercises, more elaborations and deepen a lot of arguments treated in all the months behind.
When I presented in Cadro for the 4 days workshop I first felt a little angry, I was used to participate in classes where the teacher showed us new technics, new materials and so on. But this time we had to work on our own work, a series we started during the year, we solely had the information that Linda would make us do some more exercises, discuss students work one by one.
Its difficult to explain what happened during this 4 days: the class was simply superb, a lot of already known people that I usually met in Cadro for other textile classes and a few "new" ones. The ambiance was great, everybody was interested to discuss and share with other students the own work. I loved the way we had discussions between students about how to go on with a work or a color choice, a mark to apply, technics where shared and I really appreciated to work togheter with all this people. Linda was, like always, the best, we had a lot of interesting inputs, good advices and critique, and obviously also some prosecco! Thanks a lot to Linda and also to Marlis.

This was really a theme I had my difficulties about:

Joyful colour play
At first I had a bad time with Joy, I was absolutely blocked! Then started to think about colours and their significance to me and it became clear that the only way to express joy was
Playing with red! I was quite going to finish my piece when it happens to me that I could not wait: and I overpainted some spirals with a strong red! I ruined the whole piece! so cuttter by the hand and once again!
Painted, dyed and printed cotton, lutradur and organza, cutted and sewed together again, overlaid.
It was a joy to play with it!

Saturday I spent a nice day with some friends in Neuchâtel visiting the EXNA IV exhibition. There where a lot of god works and some who are not really my buisness but that's up to personal preference. Unfortunatly no picture could be taken and the catalog don't really reflect the colors of the works. Very nice the part of 30x30 cm works from invited artists. If you have some time the exhibition has been extended until october 17!

I'm back from mountain retreat where I spent the summer. I had a little time working on my textile walls: first wall called Graffity is done with cleaning towels from breakdown printing session, lutradur, monoprinted cotton and some organza, computer printed, hand stiched and over printed again.

Textile Abstractions theme was FLORA:

Biodiversity
In June I used some silk for break down printing. But I forgot that soda soaked silk don’t last for month! And the silk I used was there for month!! So the result was not what I expected. But exactly this piece was the perfect background for my Flora project. I printed over with acrylic paint some grasses and wildflowers then added leftover painted Lutradur and printed organza. The piece is entirely hand stiched I embroidered some Arnica flowers with silk whole. I’ll call it biodiversity in honour of the international year of biodiversity this year. Looking forward to the next theme!

In a hurry

I’m in a hurry to get things done,
I rush and rush until life’s no fun.
All I really gotta do is live and die,
but I’m always in a hurry and don’t know why.

When I first saw the new theme of our challenge I had a lots of ideas how to realize it. Then things throwed down: my house in reconstruction up in the mountains had to be finished for the end of may and as usual things never works as you planned, at the hospital, where I work, there have been other problems, my daughter felt sick at university and I had to take care of her and so on.
So suddenly I was in a hurry, as ever. My work is a mirror of this. The old clock symbolize the quieter times we once had, the running figures symbolize the fact that I’m always running.

Time is really the thing I'm missing most at the moment! I'm always in a hurry since e few month. Theres our house in reconstruction up in the mountains and its extremely time consuming to supervise all this men who are working in and absolutely don't want to discuss about technical things with a woman. so the last theme for textile abstraction challenge was really pointing the finger on it. Hello every body, I completely forgott to post the music Theme work of Textile abstractions to my blog: I must Admitt , MUSIC hasn't been a easy theme for me. I had some difficulties to represent what music really means to me. In my younger years I had some piano lessons and since that time I prefer classic music for slow down and meditating, even if I listen to all kind of music, but Rock 'n Roll for me is better when I'm cleaning up the house.

So my choice is Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most acclaimed and influencial composer and pianist of all time. I not only like the music he componed but also admire him because he sufferd from a tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and became compleatly deaf. One of his most known symphony is the ninth, written in complete deafness!

I used bleach discharged fabrics, calligraphy and its all stiched by machine.

I used some breakdown print, some bleach discharge, and naturally one of my paintings on cotton with calligraphy, added some organza and some lime seed , they aren't sewed at the moment but dinner want's to be prepared!!

I'm sorry but in the last time I really find it hard to manage with all the duties. So artwork is paused and just some ramblings are possible. In my calligraphy class we had to do this one small work: pick out a word of a sentence and wright it in big letters and then arrange the rest of the sentence in order to create a picture. I have to say that it seems too clean for me, so i tried out more interesting ones:

Hello, back from holidays! and back to calligraphy class!

New experiences writing with found objects, I feel this is my thing!! this card is composed with exercise cut outs, glued on a new paper and writing over again! I was inteded to put away all my exercise papers, I thought, no need to collect more stuff in my house! Wrong! my teacher told me: nothing will be thrown away, cut out interesting shapes and play! My husband will be entusiast about more stuff hanging around in our house!!!

I had a good time last week with painting and drawing on cotton, trying different techniques. I washed and scratched with a brush a painting I didn't like too much and suddenly I saw the wall!

So my wall "scratched" is assembled with pieces of painted cotton (acrylic paint) hand and machine stitched.

today is post day for the first theme of Textile Abstraction quilt challenge group:

The choice of my theme « walls » was not taken at random. In effect its a long time I’m fascinated of old weathered walls, brick walls in old houses, paint who scrapes of and make interesting shapes and design, altered color on weather exposed walls and so on.

At the time we created the group I already had visited an interesting exhibition of photographs about the wall of Berlin.

I started with a mind mapping about the theme and found some interesting aspects: there are a few famous walls in the world, walls can protect, imprison, retain and bear, but there are also walls in our minds. Not a long time ago Swiss people decided to not allow the construction of minarets in Switzerland, for me this is a wall too! So many possibilities that I could work on for a long time!

But sincerely, with Christmas, New Year, my work, and at least my family, two month where not enough time to develop some deeper meanings, so I decided for a simple brick wall.

The materials I used are photograph prints, paper, paint and my « red brick » is entirely sewed with the machine.

I had to buy a design book I needed for the masterclass with Linda Colsh. I found what I was looking for in Amazon and as every time i visit Amazon I ordered other books: This one is really exiting me: A practical guide to freeing the artist within expressive drawing by Steven Aimone.

He proposes workshops with practical exercises you can do. So Today I had a little time, put some music on and start drawing with acrylic paint. Automatic drawing: just let it happen make lines, marks, cover (erase) and go on until you don't feel its OK fro you. I had a great time! The first image is entirely drawn with my left hand , the second with my dominant right hand.

Calligraphy class

its now 3 weeks I started a calligraphy class. that's a long time I wanted to learn this first of all classic calligraphy and then I would like to do some expressive one.

Its really difficult to write with pen and ink, thee are so many things you have to pay attention.

But I really exercise every day for near an hour and there are still problems with space and height and length, even the letters are still not all similar to what they should to be like!

So at the moment I'm not doing textile work too much fun with calligraphy!

7 cm missing! It seems that I've done a wrong interpretation of measures required for a Swiss context. It was written the quilt could be 40 to 60 cm large and 80 to 120 cm high. On my interpretation it could be but not have to!! so today they informed me that 73 cm height is not enough!

So after hiding it for e few month because I wanted to send it to the context, finally I can show it to you!

The context theme was "Nature pure" the aim was to put in the work some naturally items. I sewed the quilt with discharged black cotton grey cotton added collected natural leafs and bark pieces and some wooden branches I found after a great landslip in the village where I have my holiday flat. The nature was hardly injured and the river after more than a year is still not recovered from this event. I wanted to document with my work that "Nature pure" also could have a violent aspect.

Yesterday we had a windy and freezy day in Ticino. I had a little time in my laundry where's my working place.

I still love working with discharged fabric and I'm always collecting leafs, little pieces of bark, small sakes and other material I find on my walks.

This is a 40x 30 cm quilt stretched on canvas, I will call it "winter is coming".

Last week I started cleaning up with the left over fabrics. This little works are both made with mono print and shibori fabrics added some red sewed and stretched on canvas.

Wow, I'm going to a two year journey with an artist challenge group.

We are 12 artist who have taken a commitment to make a common art quilt with a one word theme and the size of 16" by 20" for each quilt determined by a member every two month. Start date is 1 December 2009 so stay alert to see the first quilts in February.

Last week I decided to work out the lots of tryings in different technics. In june I had done some gel medium break down prints. It was quit too much colored for me so I cut it of in smaller shapes and was by the way to throw away the leftover shapes. But I hardly throw a way anything so take a look what has been coming out just adding some leftover Lutradur.

This was a simple cleaning towel from my first break down print session. My daughter wanted me to make her 3 littel works, stretched on a canvas. They are now haning in her renovated room.
